I've only owned the point and shoot camera's and as my needs grew so did the need for a camera that has more options. Interchangeable lens's,and nikon is top notch pick for close ups and sport action photos. The "vr"vibration reduction, lens's are great for that pure action photo. Even with a 55mm 200mm the camera is so light in weight. Try to buy the two lens package, it's the best deal.

This extra lens is great if I have to take pix of my kids running at their soccer practice or dance in their music class. Easy to change, small to store in the carrying case yet very rugged so I am not afraid it will break.

I got this camera for my yearbook class/students to use. Our previous SLR camera did not take good photos during low lighting. This lens is AMAZING and works really well once you find the features which work best with the subject.

Getting a Nikon camera it is a must to have 200 mm lens for wildlife, sport, marine, etc. I wont miss this type of lens and I'm more than happy with the results of my photos. I highly recommend the camera and the lenses.

Great in good lighting conditions. Slow to focus if you are shooting moving subjects. BUT it has delivered some stunning shots under the right conditions. VR feature is decent, but the motors are loud, and it seems to slow the auto-focus as well.

Auto-focus motor has stopped working.

I am a mom who has very active kids. I use it mostly for sporting events, school events, and family gatherings. I love the sharp focus when zooming. Our main sports are baseball and equestrian and the focus is quick enough for me to get hitting shots, pitching and horse riding jumps. Love it!

With the 18-105 lens that came with my D90,it will only become useful when I get a doubler. I recomend a 50mm lens if you are only going to have two lenses for now, or like I said, a doubler to get 2X out of the 200mm lens. As a lens on its own, good pics from 20 to 100 feet.

We bought this lens to shoot wakeboarding photos. It is the perfect length for photographing 80 feet behind the boat and the vibration reduction is a must, espically as we hit the double-ups! Highly recommended as the photos from our first two sessions are the best we have ever seen.

i had a d40 before and just upgraded to a d5000. This lens is great for outdoor photos. The zoom is great and AF is smooth. It is not snappy as the smaller lens but for this price you cannot ask for more. Over all i am very happy with this lens. I rather have this lens then spend money on a 18-200mm VR. Shooting with a 55-200mm VR is a pleasure but if you want closer shots you have to moves back...but that doesnt bother me as some people who fork out $400 more for the 18-200mm for the convenience.

This is an excellent lens for general purpose outdoor shooting and the VR helps with the zoom clarity a lot. I really enjoy the Nikon D60 camera, and this lens gets you up close for outdoor and sporting activities.

great zoom lens to start out with. came with a 2 lens camera bundle i ordered and spends most of its time on the camera body. the zoom is nice when taking portraits because you don't have to get in the subject's face for close ups. not the greatest for landscapes or panoramas, but with VR at least those photos will still be sharp!

I bought this lens because I was used to a zoom lens on my point and shoot and wanted a zoom when I upgraded to an SLR. This lens fits the bill perfectly. It's easy to attach to the camera body, and it's easy to use. It's one purchase that I'm definately glad I made.

I use this lens primarily for hang gliding and paragliding shots. With my previous lens I used, a Quantary 70-300, I would get blurred photos; it would not focus fast enough or show the closer shots clearly. Now I can get very good photos of up to one thousand feet or more. The members of AHGA are amazed at the quality of this lens compared to the last one. Using the circular polarizer, I can take photos of them flying with the sun in the back round, making for stunning shots. I have yet figured out how to use my camera efficiently in flight. We have discussed this during the monthly meetings and have not come up with a viable method to be able to use a DSLR in flight without flying tandem (which I do not do), once I get over that hurdle, I will submit another review. Using a DSLR while flying I am not able to use the view finder or zoom feature, point and shoot is a hit or miss situation with a DSLR. I would greatly recommend this for any one that needs an all purpose lens. I have also taken some fantastic two, three, and four dimensional panoramic shots.

I love taking pictures. I have always used 35mm until my husband bought me the Nikon D60 camera for Christmas. I recently bought the Nikon 55-200 VR Lens and am "In Love" with the new Lens. I love how sharp my portraits are, from a good distance so I can get natural expressions, not posed. Seems to need much less light for a good shot. Lighter and easier to hold than I expected it to be.

I bought the Nikon D60 camera with the 18-55mm lens and added the 55-200mm lens. Both are great lenses but the latter has been on the camera 95% of the time. I am a woodturner/carver and my wife makes jewelry. We need to take pictures of our products and this lens is perfect. Most of the picture cropping is done with the lens at the time of shooting. I also take pictures of our golfing club's activities, grandkids and their sports. Results have been spectacular! Pleased!

Brought this camera to DC with my for the inauguration, and while I didn't get into the Mall, it served me well.

It's lightweight and easy to use. It was perfect for trying to take candid photos of people from afar.

I liked this lens so well I bought it twice. The first one was stolen while waiting for a flight to Canada at the Dayton International Airport. Stolen lens also had a $50 polarizing filter attached. Gadzooks. At any rate, I enjoy the lens for nature photography and grandchildren's sporting events. There may be better lenses out there, but for an amateur like me, it's a very good lens and a fine value.

This is a great lens to have. I put it on the camera the second I opened it, and I've barely taken it off since. It's awesome to have a telephoto lens that can be used in everyday situations. The only thing that might be difficult is taking large group shots if you're in an enclosed space...all I can say is either keep backing up, or take seperate shots of the group!
I can't wait to use it for my brother's track meets!

After 14 months and about 600 shots, the auto focus motor stopped working. The lens was never dropped or abused. It worked on one shot and stopped on the next shot 10 seconds later.

First I bought a lens that wouldn't autofocus w/my Nikkon. I researched to find lens that zoom from 18-200 didn't focus well. I am so glad i got the perfect compliment to the fabulous 18-55mm Nikkor lens that came with my camera. While shooting stage events for the Richmond Times-Dispatch, I kept one lens in my tuxedo, slipped on the Nikkor zoom when taking stage photos, and got great shots both up close and far.

For the price you can't get a better lense. True for more money you can but for all beginners and hobbyist out there this will perform very well and you won't have to get a second mortgage.

The first time I used this lens I was very excited about the clarity. It took a little bit of getting used to zooming since my other lens is 18-55 which is very easy to use and focuses really fast. With a little bit of practice it becomes easier, but it's still a little slow to focus.

Great add on to your D40 or D60 kit. With this lens and your kit lens youʻre ready for most situations. Only down side is possibly losing a shot when you have to switch lenses.

So far, so good! I love shooting with my 55-200mm. Able to acheive great DOF especially for portraits which is what I do mostly. The focus is a little slower than I expected and the VR is noisy, but overall I have been VERY pleased with the end results!

A few days after I received this lens I had the chance to capture a red-tailed hawk, which resides in the park reserve adjacent to my house. I got out my Manfroto/Bogen tripod and started to take exposures (with VR off of course) using a range of shutter speeds to obtain the sharpest image. I used the 200mm focal length for all images. Using my Nkon D300, I was able to see the images recorded were not close enough. So, I decided to hand-hold the next few shots at a closer spot. Now much closer and with the VR activated I took several more exposures before the hawk flew away.

I am happy to report the hand-held shots were as good as the ones using the tripod! The zoom ring is pretty well dampened and fun to use. Portraits at the 70mm (equal to 105mm in DX body) focal range are quite sharp. I do not have a more expensive lens in same focal length to compare but, I am very pleased with the sharpness and color this lens produces. The picture attached is too small to appreciate. However, at full frame on my iMac computer's background it is great!

I really like the lens but I wish I had purchased the 17-210 like I had planned. I am constantly changing lenses from 17-55 to the 55-200. If you have a lot of close shots then far away shots this would be ok but if you do a mixture of shots - look into the other lens.

I am no professional by any means, but I felt that I have outgrown the reach of my kit lens (18-55mm). I wanted something that could get me in a little closer. I wasn't sure that I needed the VR. I am glad that I got it. On the longer end I see myself as a little shaky and the VR absolutely helped with that. For the price it is hard to beat. Of course, I would have loved a Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8, but for almost a tenth of the price this performs more than enough for my needs.

This is my first VR lens and I would definitely say its worth it. At first I was sceptical about the VR, but once I tried it I can't see when I will ever buy another lens without it! Try and find a better lens on the market for the same money, because you won't!

Everything was really good, the only problem I had was the casing at the end of the lens came loose. Once I tightened it, it was fine. I just came back from Italy and took about 700 pic's. I'm very happy with the camera(Nikon D40) and this lens.

Altho I do not use the lense that much, when I have I'm constantly impressed with its quality! I find myself backing up from the subject more and more to get the overall shots! I was surprised at how quiet the lense was compared to other brands. Definately quick and easy to change and mount for focus and that just right action shot in the field! Sports or other wise.

Purchased for trip to a remote area of the Philippines. VR works well under majority of situations. 3.9-foot focal distance means can't use in doors in small to average size rooms. Had to switch lens for majority of in-door shooting. Ghosting in some low light shots with bright subjects (full Moon in sky at 7 PM). Tripod helps in long distance shots. However got some great photos crouched on a river bank in the evening with camera braced on my knees. Light weight and compact means I did not have to carry a lot of equipment on long hikes. Over all an excellent value for the money.

I use the 55-200mm vr lens for shooting wildlife and flowers. Its lightweight, easy to handle and give a sharp photo most of the time. The best feature is while shooting with the lens at 200mm there is virtually no shake when not using a tripod. I like this lens so much that I rarely use any other lens. For the beginner or hobbyist, it's a great lens.

I'm just an amateur, so take this review for what it is, but this lens is great. It's easy to change. It's great to actually get close-up to the object, be it wildlife or people. And even though it's a longer lens and I've heard you can get blurrier pictures, the vibration reduction must really work because I never use a tripod and all the pictures come out clear as a bell - even those I shot while in a kayak.

Until now I have used a point and shoot digital camera. Prior to that it was a Nikon 35MM. I have had many Nikon cameras over the years with a variety of lenses. I am very pleased with this as a second all purpose lens. The VR feature is very nice. The only complaint I have is when on auto focus it tends to be inconsistant in what it will focus on when doing close up work. To compensate I just take it off auto focus when it is being annoying.

I like this lens okay. Even though it is VR my pictures are still blurry when I zoom it the full amount. It does awful inside..even more blurry! I would recommend a flash with it. It is pretty heavy but Im new to SLR cameras.

This lens is terrific - it quickly is focused and so very quiet! I love the ease of use with it. I chose the VR as I often have the camera with me on hikes and lugging a tripod is not doable - took pictures of birds in the woods yesterday and was able to zoom in on them quietly and get the shots. It is much smaller and lighter than a lens of the same mm sizes for my film camera giving the overall product a smaller size - lighter and easier to carry.

I upgraded from the TAMRON 18-200mm to this lens just a week ago. I can not believe the difference between the clarity and DOF with this lens compared to the Tamron. I had been told that the TAMRON was far better as far as sharpness, but I never was able to achieve a sharp focus on the fly, as with this lens.

It is is a "must have item" teamed with the 18-55mm VR.

I just returned the non VR model for this one after figuring out that my hands aren't as steady as I'd like them to be and missing a few shots because I didn't have a tripod with me. The VR works as advertised, and I am excited that I can now zoom all the way to 200 mm in sunny conditions with out blurring! Just picked up a Nikon D80 and needed a decent zoom without breaking the bank. The lens does feel cheap, but as a consequence, it is very light. The field results of the past month have beaten my expectations, it's very sharp and easy to stow, even in my smaller bag. This would be the lens I'd take on vacations, or the backyard. The quality is high enough for great shots, and the price is right to shrug off loosing it (lost, stolen, or broken). VR works as expected, but it won't bail you out in every situation, and is no replacement for a mono/tripod. Pair with the 18-55mm DX VR, and you’ve got a killer, easy to carry combination.

I bought this lens as a second/zoom lens to accompany my 18-55mm kit lens that came with my Nikon D40.First, I will say that this lens takes great photos with the D40. There are better/faster Nikkor lenses; however, for the cost, the value of this lens is AWESOME. It's light and relatively sturdy. [$]. I feel that for MOST amateur and semi pro photographers--- this lens is perfect. [@]Again, there are better lenses out on the market----but for the value--- this one wins in my book. [...]

I love my new lens! Christmas night we were all snapping pictures of family...others printed their pictures and had lots of blurry shots due to lighting etc. Mine were perfectly clear even under less than perfect conditions. I can't wait to use this lens during basketball season. I really like the 200 zoom capacity.

This lens produced probably the single sharpest image I've ever seen come out of my camera. At 100% crop, it was still almost perfectly crisp. I couldn't believe it. There was distortion at the edges, but stopping the lens down a little probably would've helped that. I used flash to take the picture.

I compared the focus speed right there in the store to the 70-300VR, and the 55-200VR was faster by a LOT. Quite snappy. Impressed once again.

I went straight from my local Ritz store to a soccer game I just happened to find. It was a very cloudy day, and the lens could not afford me a fast enough shutter speed to stop the action. It was only when the sun came out fully that I was able to shoot at the 1/500 I needed. Nearly every shot until then had blurry players because they were just moving too fast.

I took the lens back to the store and got a full, hassle-free refund. I also found that, even at 200mm, f/5.6 doesn't give you enough depth-of-field to help to subject stand out from the surrounding players.

BUT, if you're not using it for sports, this is a really, really good lens.

Great lens to go beyond 55mm focal length range with virbration reduction. The only cons I found was that autofocus is a little slow as compared to 18-55mm lens but that might be because of the greater focal length. On the whole, I'm just loving it and specially it's VR feature.

This is a perfect companion lens to the kit lens on the D40 and D40X. The quality is exactly on par with the kit lens (which is quite good for a kit lens), and the VR system works very well. Hand-held shots at 200mm with shutter speeds down around 1/50th come out with no discernible blur. If you want more focal length, but don't wan to pay three times as much for the 18-200mm AF-S, this is the way to go.

I have been extremely impressed with this lens! The only one that I would deem better would be the 18-200mm, but what a price tag. It is amazing what a difference the VR makes on this lens. My only complaint is the reinforced plastic material that it is made of makes it feel a little fragile, but so far seems to be very durable. Even with the high f stops, I have been impressed with the ability of this lens to create a beautifully soft bokeh.
The photos I attached have not been altered in any way.

A great value for an ED-IF VR Nikon Lens.
I have been playing with it for two weeks now,
very happy with its performance. Attached ia picture I took with this len on my D80 camera. It was taken hand-held, at 200mm, shutter speed was 1/30 of a second.

THE VR ALLOWS ME TO LEAVE THE TRIPOD AND GO MOBILE. I WENT WITH THIS LENSE AFTER COMPARING IT IN PERSON WITH THE 70-300 VR. I COULDNT JUSTIFY SPENDING TWICE AS MUCH AND NOT GETTING THAT MUCH MORE LENSE.

An overall great lens. The VR does a great job at fixing a lot of problems.

Only complaint is that the lens is a little large and doesn't fit in the snug LowePro dSLR case that I have.

I bought this lens to supplement my 18-135 lens. With the addition on VR to the lens you simply can't beat it for the price and performance. My only complaints is the manual focus ring. When you attach the lens hood and zoom out to 55mm you simply can't get your fingers on the ring. Other than that anyone who is starting out with a dSLR should have this lens in their bag.

I just purchased the lens and tried it out at the lake. The VR is amazing! Had slight blur on only a few pictures. I was only able to notice it once I loaded the picture for reviewing in my computer. Users will still want to keep an eye on the shutter speed. I found that I lost some depth of field at f-stops of 13 on some close-ups. I'm still extremely happy with it!

It is a fantastic lens. This lens liberates my Nikon to another level. I can freely take pictures indoors and outdoors with my 55-200mm VR zoom lens. I took about 300+ pictures of an indoor musical performance. The results were fantastic. I could frequently use 1/15 seconds at 200mm, and the result was sharp photos. (Of course, you have to seize the moment when singers/actors stop moving.)I am also enjoying of taking close up pictures without a tripod. Its magnification is about 4:1. The close focusing distance is pretty short compared with my other Nikon zoom lens at 200mm. It can focus at about 3+ feet.The battery consumption seems not an issue to me. I don't see any significant difference on my battery life after talking more than 300+ pictures. MY D70 battery gage is still full. I also really like the internal focusing mechanism. Nothing is rotating except the small focusing ring while focusing. The focusing is smooth with a minimal noise. It not the fastest focusing lens though.The VR mechanism actually makes a noise (a kind of small motor). The level is not offending me or a person right next to me.What are the draw backs?1. 55mm sometimes too long.2.. It is not the sharpest glass, especially at 200mm with f5.6. Just stop down to f8 to beyond. It is much better. (By the way, VR compensates this by allowing a slower shutter speed!) 3. VR mechanism seems not so sturdy as the lens construction. The time will tell.In short, for $[...], it is a real bargain. I am really happy with this lens. Highly recommended.

I ordered this lens the day it became available. I almost bought the non VR 55-200 and I'm glad I waited. I used it on my D40. The internal motor does a great job stabilizing the image. I was shooting at 200mm from the upper deck in Yankee stadium in continuous shooting mode, focused on the batters box. I shot over 100 frames and not one out of focus or blurry!! You can toss the tripod for most applications. I did however mount it to a tripod to try it as a portrait lens. I shot at 70mm (eq. to 105mm in 35mm format). Once again I was pleased.

How can you go wrong with [...] this VR lens. Although the build, and overall layout of this lens leaves something to be desired compared to some more entry-level Nikkor lenses. The fact that it boasts VR made me overlook those flaws. The vibration reduction works as promised.However the focus and actual VR workings are a bit noiser than I would have hoped. Well put together, sharp, crisp focus...no vignetting. A must have lens to supplement your zoom needs if youre on a budget.

I bought this as an upgrade to the 55-200 non VR model. I liked the non-VR model, which performed just fine optically but found I needed help with stabilization. This VR model does just what it is supposed to do.With the non-VR model, I was able to hand-hold as slow as about 1/350 sec at 200 mm With the VR model, I can get the same results down to say 1/125.Assuming this lens performs like the prior one, it will be great.Prior lens was a bit soft wide open and stopped way down. It was plenty sharp at F8-F16.Oh, and the lens hood is nicer on this one.[...] If you mind your settings it will give you nice sharp images and the image stabilization will allow you to shoot when you could not otherwise.
